Types Of Disc Golf Grips Explained

Mastering Disc Golf Grips: A Personal Journey to Improve Your Game

Hey there, fellow disc golf enthusiasts! If you’re anything like me, you know that disc golf isn’t just a casual pastime; it’s a passion that drives us to improve our game constantly. One essential aspect that significantly impacts our throws is the art of disc golf grips. Believe me when I say that mastering various grips can level up your performance and transform you into a disc golf wizard! So, join me on this personal journey as I share my experiences and insights on disc golf grips.

Getting a Grip on the Basics

Alright, let’s start with the basics! A disc golf grip is the foundation of your throws. It’s the way you hold the disc before releasing it into the air. You might be surprised to learn how much it influences your accuracy and distance.

The Three Primary Disc Golf Grips

Backhand Grip

The backhand grip is the classic and most widely used technique in disc golf. When I began my disc golf journey, this was my go-to grip. To perfect it, place your thumb on top of the disc and your fingers underneath. As you pull the disc back and release it with a snap of your wrist, you’ll witness newfound control and accuracy. However, remember that each player is unique, so don’t hesitate to experiment until you find the grip that best suits your style.

Forehand Grip (Sidearm)

As I progressed in my game, I realized that having a solid forehand grip in my arsenal could be a game-changer. The forehand grip involves placing your thumb on the inside rim and your fingers on the outer rim of the disc. By using a flicking motion and snapping your wrist, you’ll achieve a powerful throw that curves to the right (for right-handed players). It’s perfect for navigating those tricky right-turning fairways! Keep in mind there is no “Right Way” and it’s all about what is comfortable to you. I personally use the two finger stack grip, but Ive seen other players who throw with one finger or different variations of the two finger power grip.

Delving Deeper into Disc Golf Grips

Power Grip Techniques

Ah, the power grip! This one took some time for me to master, but it was worth the effort. The power grip is designed for maximum distance. By holding the disc with all your fingers underneath it, you’ll achieve a stronger grip and increased wrist snap. Just be careful not to grip it too tightly, as that could hinder your throw. With practice, the power grip will take your drives to new heights!

Specialty Grips for Specific Situations

When to Hyzer, When to Anhyzer

As I encountered different course layouts, I realized the value of knowing when to use the hyzer and anhyzer shot with different grips. The hyzer grip, released with a leftward angle for right-handed players, is fantastic for navigating right-turning fairways or avoiding obstacles on the right. Conversely, the anhyzer grip, released with a rightward angle for right-handed players, is your secret weapon when left-turning fairways come your way. See a more detailed explanation on hyzer vs anhyzer here.

Mastering the Roller Grip

The roller grip was an absolute game-changer for me. When faced with tight spaces or the need for extreme distance on flat terrain, this grip shines. To execute it correctly, tilt the disc and let it roll along the ground. With practice, you’ll control the disc’s trajectory and achieve impressive results. For rollers On both forehand and backhand throws I tend to lean to a power grip and just let it rip with an understable disc. This will make the disc turn and hit the ground and roll for a good distance if done correctly.

Factors Affecting Grip Choice

It’s a Matter of Weather and Course

As I honed my disc golf skills, I learned to adapt my grip selection to various factors. Weather conditions play a significant role in determining the best grip for each throw. A damp disc might require a slightly different grip for better control. Additionally, each course layout might present unique challenges. Analyze the course, visualize your throws, and select the grip that gives you the edge.

Hand Size Matters

I’m not just talking about finding the perfect glove fit! Your hand size can influence your grip choice. Experiment with different grips and adjustments to ensure a comfortable hold that allows for proper control during throws.

As we conclude our journey through the world of disc golf grips, I hope you’ve found this guide to be both enlightening and inspiring. Embrace the challenges and celebrate the victories, for each throw is an opportunity to refine your skills and grow as a player.
